Elvis has Colonel Tom Parker, the Beatles had Brian Epstein. Martine Locke has…..well, Martine Locke. This Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist is a one-woman operation: publicist, manager, booking agent, record label owner, visionary, producer and artist.

Dividing her time between the US and Australia, Martine has toured with Ani DiFranco and rocked the stage with The Cowboy Junkies, Arlo Guthrie and Luka Bloom. In a scene that is packed with unoriginal four chord flops, Martine reaches well outside with a more independent, passionate perspective on music. Her music is "so powerful that it demands attention". And while the Ani comparison is there, she also shares vocal qualities with Melissa Etheridge or the Indigo Girls.  [more...]

 

The Velvet Janes

The story that is The Velvet Janes begins in Nov 94, two thousand miles from home, surrounded by thousands of people. It's cold, it's wet and it's really really crowded. There's no hot water and a group of visiting artists have been assigned the last remaining beds, (in the entire universe it seemed). what no one told them though is that the beds were in an old shearing shed and no one had been in there to check if the beds actually still existed.

Meanwhile...on the other side of what is fast becoming a lake, another group of musicians from yet another side of the country are hastily trying to retrieve what is left of their possessions as they float away, along with the tent they were once protected by.

Thrown together by this unusual and definitely memorable set of circumstances, are Rose Farrow and Martine Locke.  [more....]
